Many people fear electric polishers for a number of reasons.Cleanie Dini says- there is no reason to fear electric polishers, only those who operate them.
Electric polishers seem to have gotten a bad name because of their ability to tear through paint and burn gel coat. A high speed rotary polisher can cause considerable damage to anything depending on what you have on the end of it and how fast it is going. The trick is to use the right products for the job at the right speed with the right technique. A polisher can restore a ten year old gel coat to almost new condition. But that same polisher can act as a sander with a harsh abrasive on a soft surface, like paint. The high speed rotary polisher has a mild brother that is nearly fool-proof. The random orbital polisher is made to simulate the up and down motion of hand polishing while slowly spinning at the same time. It is difficult to do damage with a random orbital polisher because it is not generating heat. It simply vibrates and rubs the compound, polish or wax in to the surface. This process has become very popular because of the bad reputation that high speed rotary buffing has gotten.
